Tanzania
has a more than 700 birds species in a wide array of habitats.
In addition, Tanzania lies on the traditional migratory
route of birds moving southwards to avoid the harsh winter
conditions in the northern hemisphere. From as far as the
Bering Straits and as far as the northern tip of Norway,
millions of birds pass through East Africa. It is estimated
that over 5 billion birds make the journey each
year.
During
you visit to any national game reserve in Tanzania, you
will see hundreds of different species. One important aspect
to note is that birding safaris require lots of proper planning
and adequate time must be set aside. In Tanzania, there
are several locations which we recommend due to the vast
diversity of birdlife present.
Arusha Ngurdoto Crater National Park.
There are three distinct areas in this park; Ngurdoto Crater,
the Momella Lakes and Mt. Meru. It is around the Momella
Lakes that you will find an abundance of birdlife including
geese, flamingos, herons, egrets, storks, spoonbills, ducks,
plovers and raptors.
Lake
Manyara National Park
In addition to the stunning wildlife, there is a huge array
of birdlife in this park. The lake has contributed immensely
in creating a natural habitat for hundreds of bird species
(over 350 different species are found here). Along the lake
shore, you will find pelicans, flamingos, kingfishers, and
waders. Further into the woodlands, plenty of swallows,
larks, doves and hornbills are found.
Mkomazi
Game Reserve
This is a relatively new reserve south of the Kenyan border.
The reserve has stunning views of Mt. Kilimanjaro and Taita
Hills can be seen from its escarpment. The area has abundant
birdlife and is still relatively quiet as it lies slightly
off the beaten track.
Other
excellent birding safari locations include Ngorongoro Conservation
Area, Ruaha National Park, Selous Game Reserve, Serengeti
National Park with over 500 species identified, and the
Tarangire National Park where you will find more that 300
species of birds, including Martial and Bateleur eagle.
The Tarangire National Park also attracts flamingos and
pelicans in the rainy season.
